A branding for Taronga Zoo's Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre
A branding for Taronga Zoo's Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre
Taronga is a leader in reptile and amphibian conservation in Australia. They have brought back seven reptile and amphibian species from the brink of extinction.
The development of the new centre will allow Taronga to continue to lead the recovery of species that would otherwise be lost to future generations. It will provide critical breeding space to support zoo-based conservation programs to ensure important species, such as Corroboree Frogs, are protected for decades to come.
The new centre will provide a new innovative and immersive experience for guests to engage with reptiles and amphibians which has been designed with the latest best-practice standards for animal care and welfare. It will be an educational and multi-layered experience for guests that showcases the beauty and diversity of some of the most misunderstood and most imperilled creatures on the planet under threat, from climate change, disease and habitat modification.
I had the privilege of branding the centre and this a snapshot into the creative outcome:
● Logotype: The form of a reptile eye is exaggerated in the “A”, a red-eyed tree frog “climbing through” is masked out of the “R” and a reticulated python forms the negative space of the “C”.
● Colour: A carefully curated palette, of two hues in sets of tonal trios, when used correctly can give the hint of a shimmer or metallic contrast associated with the animals.
Within the sets are two vibrant, highlight tones.
The incorporation of the analogous colour scheme creates a harmony and speaks with a clear simple voice. This is perfect for “colour coding” the centre and aiding in wayfinding.
Although within the animals there is such a wide spectrum of incredible colours, this palette feels familiar with green for Reptile and blue for Amphibian offering a way of Distinction.
● Pattern/Supporting Art: A suite of textured organic graphic elements have been created influenced by the form of the animals scales and their patterns.
The elements can be used with a lowered opacity as watermarks or in combination to bring texture and interest to block colour. This is an excellent graphic option for collateral.
Two patterns have been created both informed by the reticulated python and made in both sets of hues.
A suite of textured expression elements that can be used to frame type or images were designed with ease of application in mind. The vector corner designs were made to fit any canvas. They bring texture and organically inject branding to photography or artwork.
Together, these design elements create a captivating visual narrative that enhances the patrons experience and adds to the cohesion and immersion of the centre.
